Shawn and Brian - FaceBook [Nov. 25th, 2009|08:31 pm]
Five days ago the unprecedented happened. Both Shawn and Brian posted pictures of themselves on FaceBook. I was inspired to draw Kevin's World versions of them. Here they are.

Visual and Martial - The Arts [Nov. 24th, 2009|07:54 pm]
Martial Arts Alternative

I was lamenting in a recent post about how much my old Martial Arts school had changed into something I no longer like.
It got me thinking and I said, "Why come I gots to go there?"
OK, I didn't really say that, but I realized that there are other schools I could go to for what I want.
I enjoyed learning a style of martial arts in a conservatively sized class.
My old school may have become a huge training ground for thick necked, bald killing machines, but there are other schools.
I looked around and found that just two minutes away is a nice little school that teaches all the various forms of Kung Fu.
And a little further up the road is another nice little school that teaches strict Karate.
How perfect is that? The two sides of the coin.
Karate is the hard, straight forward, Japanese style, and Kung Fu is the soft, circular motion, Chinese style.
I'd like to take both classes.

Art School Confidential

I started out wanting to go to art school after graduation, but when I realized I couldn't afford it I started taking pride in being able to tell people I was self taught, and never took a lesson.
After many years of not breaking into the industry I began to think I should find a way to go to school after all.
I enrolled and took a semester of online classes at a major art institute and found that I learn and practice much more efficiently on my own than in the classroom curriculum setting. That, and I still couldn't afford it.
I joined large online art groups and found the experience to be horrible.
The instructors/forum moderators/contest judges were just disgruntled, self-absorbed, failed artists that never made it in the industry.
The students/forum members/contest participants seemed to form cliques and follow random art trends and flavors of the month.
Many more years went by and I began to feel I missed out on what would have been a really great experience, had I gone off to an art school at 18.
Well, I just watched a movie called Art School Confidential, about a kid that goes off to art school.
It was just like all of my online experiences exactly, except he was on campus.
The behind the scenes interviews reveal that the movie was written and made by people that went to art school, had these experiences and learned very little about art.
Though I still think it would have been quite an experience that would probably give me many stories to tell, I just don't feel like I missed out on something all that great anymore.

Star Trek Collection - 4 [Nov. 22nd, 2009|06:18 pm]
This is my micro-machine of the Next Genereation crew's Enterprise.
Photobucket
And the Next Generation crew themselves.

Photobucket
More of the next-gen figures.

Photobucket
And here is the crew of Deep Space Nine.

Photobucket
My security officer shirt (that doesn't fit anymore).

Photobucket
And my authentic, working communicator and phaser.

Photobucket
Check out how cool the communicator is. This is extremely awesome!

And check out how cool the phaser is.

The ultimate part of my collection of course are the 148 DVDs.
Photobucket
And some really great books.

Photobucket
Photobucket
Here are some other working props that have been released this year, but they are kinda pricey and not really what I want.
The science and medical tricorders, and the tribbles (they all have sound and moving features).

Photobucket
Photobucket
Photobucket
I also have many hours of soundtrack music that I converted from the original CDs to MP3s.

Star Trek Collection - 3 [Nov. 22nd, 2009|05:50 pm]
Here are Kirk and Spock as they appeared in the first film, Star Trek: The Motion Picture.
Photobucket
An alternate color Kirk was released that I will not be buying.
Photobucket
But I wish they would make a figure of Spock in his Vulcan robes.
Photobucket
For the rest of the movies, Star Trek II through VI, they got these uniforms.

Photobucket
And this is when Spock died.

Photobucket
Kirk down below, on the Genesis planet.

Photobucket
I don't have the alternate, yelling "Khan!!!!!", version.
Photobucket
Or the figures of Commander Sarek (Kirstie Alley)...
Photobucket
Or Captain Terrell. And I feel no need to buy them.
Photobucket
The Klingons that killed Kirk's son in Star Trek III were made but cancelled before release.
I didn't want them anyway.

Photobucket
But I do like my Kirk and Spock in civillian clothes from Star Trek IV.
I just wish they'd make the rest of the crew. Sulu looked awesome.

Star Trek Collection - 2 [Nov. 22nd, 2009|05:17 pm]
Here's the classic crew of the Enterprise (although Chekov wasn't added till season 2).
Photobucket
And here they are in the Mirror Universe. (Sulu's head is turned so you can see his scar)

Photobucket
The Mirror Universe Marlena Moreau was also released, but she's too expensive (and not needed).

Photobucket
Kirk and Spock from the episode, Amok Time. (if you're a fan, the duel music is now in your head)

Photobucket
Here's Kirk in his wraparound green shirt, his command chair with tribbles, and his dress uniform.
Photobucket
Here are the awesomely cool features of that chair. Turn up your volume.

Here are some upcoming figures. Kirk in his third season green shirt with gold epilets, McCoy with short sleeves, Nurse Chapel and Yeoman Rand.

Photobucket
Interestingly, Rand wore a gold shirt in her early publicity photos.

Photobucket
Photobucket
And went back to gold by the first movie.

Photobucket
Here are some aliens. The Klingon Kor and the Gorn.

Photobucket
And Khan Noonien Singh from the episode, Space Seed and the second movie, The Wrath of Khan.

Photobucket
And here are a few that haven't come out yet. A few Romulans.

Photobucket
And the Klingon Kang, along with Kirk as a Romulan and Spock with his eyebrow raised.

Star Trek Collection - 1 [Nov. 22nd, 2009|04:51 pm]
Over the next few posts I'll show you my Star Trek Collection
First up is a micro-machine of the starship Enterprise.

Photobucket
This is Captain Christopher Pike from the first pilot episode from 1964.

Photobucket
And this is how Spock appeared in that episode.
Photobucket
But unfortunately the figure has not yet been released.

Photobucket
When they transported down to the planet surface, they wore jackets.

Photobucket
I was able to get this 12 inch figure of Captain Pike with the jacket, and the original versions of the phaser, communicator and tricorder for only a few dollars. It's my only actual "doll".

Photobucket
This green Orion slave girl is the last figure from that episode, but I don't have it because it's too expensive (and lame).
Photobucket
In 1965 the entire cast, except for Spock, was replaced and a second pilot episode was filmed, but they had different uniforms.

Photobucket
These figures have not yet been released.

Photobucket
Sulu also had a different shirt.
Photobucket
And they made a figure of him.
Photobucket
And Scotty also had a different shirt.
Photobucket
But they haven't made a figure for him yet.
Photobucket
Then in 1966 they filmed the first regular episode of the series.
Dr McCoy and Uhura were added to the cast and they all got their classic uniforms, except Uhura.

Photobucket
A figure for her like that has not been made, but there is one of the Salt Monster from that episode.
Photobucket
It hasn't been released yet and I don't think I'll buy it because it was only on screen for about 5 seconds and I just don't care about it.

Window Closed [Nov. 20th, 2009|10:08 am]

Saturday afternoon, Summer of 1992: Kung Fu Theater.
I'm sitting on the couch watching an afternoon marathon of some chop-sockey films on TV and I realized something.
I have a job that gives me some disposable income, a car that can take me anywhere I please, anytime I want, and martial arts look extremely fun and cool.
Why not take some classes and have some fun?
I pick up the phone and call Shawn to pass it by him.
He's excited. He's on his way over.
We drive around to some different schools, watch some classes in progress, compare prices and join.
Pretty soon we are in a room full of guys just like us. Not very athletic, but generally nice and having fun learning how to do something cool.
On weekends, Shawn and I are practicing in his backyard and even making some funny home movies.
Six months later, life gets in the way and we stop attending.

Next year I will be twice the age I was back then.
How great would it be to go back and do it again?
I could even earn a blackbelt while still in my 30's.
Well it's a different world now.
I checked out the class and had an eye opener.
I didn't see guys like me there.
Everyone was half my age, very athletic, and it didn't look fun.
It was ugly violence. Cage fighting. Sweaty guys laying on each other in thongs.
Same school, same instructor, different era.
Even when you are still alive and still active, you really only have finite windows of time to do things, and then the opportunity is gone forever.

For many years I collected coins and I had some that were a few hundred years old.
That collection is gone now, but I do have this 11 million year old, fossil shark's tooth.

My Dad bought it for a quarter at a museum in 1963.

World War III [Nov. 17th, 2009|04:11 am]
3AM: Taking my morning run and listening to the new soundtrack to Black Dynamite.
My mind lost on the tough Chicago streets of 1972.
Out of the sky streaks a bolt of fire at the speed of light. It was a Leonid Meteor.
Scared the crap out of me. I dove into a sandspur bush.

What Was Your First Concert? [Nov. 15th, 2009|01:29 pm]
Photobucket
Mine was Beatlemania, here at the Civic Center in 1991.
I went with my brother and the dude from the comic book store.
It was a Beatles tribute band and there were a maybe a thousand people there.
We even met the band afterwards. Paul was cool.
This ticket is from my second concert when I saw Metallica a month before I turned 18.
I think there was something like 70,000 people there.
I went with Shawn and Angi. Angi had stomach cramps and gas.
Metallica played Seek and Destroy seven times.
I saw them again the following year with Shawn and Tonia when they came here to the Civic Center and raised their ticket prices by two dollars.
Tonia kept saying, "Aren't I more fun than Angi?" all night.
The only concert I've been to since then was Weird Al Yankovic in 1999 at the Barbara B Mann.
I went with my brother, and a few rows ahead of us was Alex's brother Chris.
Chris was the first kid to get Optimus Prime in 5th grade and he let me borrow Grimlock and Starfire, as well as selling me the M.U.S.C.L.E. claw figure for four dollars.
None of my pictures came out at the Weird Al concert because it was too dark, even when Al came right up to my row and stood 15 feet in front of my camera.
Two years ago I actually fixed Barbara B Mann's telephone line. She was old and very busy.

This post sounds like it was made by a rambling ten year old.

New Blog Masthead [Nov. 8th, 2009|07:52 pm]
Photobucket
I was hired to create this masthead art for a new blog.
The blog was launched this morning and this is how it appeared.

Photobucket
This is the description I was given for the art:
"I'd like the image to be of a withered, robed evil high priest's hand blasting out a sickly purple death ray. In the distance a bunch of party members are disintegrating and dying."
Here is how the blog looks now.

GI Joe Collection - Volume 2 [Nov. 7th, 2009|08:46 pm]

GI Joe Collection - Volume 1 [Nov. 7th, 2009|08:32 pm]
GI Joe actually began as a comic strip in 1941 about the comical adventures of Private Breger.
Photobucket
The 1950's GI Joe comic had him fighting in the Korean War.
Photobucket
1964 gave the world it's first action figure for boys. The 12 inch tall GI Joe.
In the 1970's, anti vietnam sentiment had GI Joe switch from soldier to adventurer.

Photobucket
Then in 1982, writer/artist Larry Hama recreated GI Joe as a team of diverse characters that battled the forces of Cobra in the pages of Marvel Comics.
Photobucket
Photobucket
I've got the first 60 issues of that run.

4 Weeks Down - 18 to Go [Nov. 7th, 2009|06:05 pm]
Today marks four weeks of training complete. The last two weeks have been pretty rough.
I developed shin splints so bad that I was unable to even run my fingers along my shin bones.
When my runs degenerated into granny hobbling, and my legs started to collapse out from under me, I had to modify my training.
This involved excersizes for the anterior tibialis, the muscle along the outer edge of the front of your shin bone.
I also had to spend more time on my stretching and warm ups.
But most importantly, I had to replace several days of running with riding the stationairy bike.
Unfortunately I even took a few days rest from my excersizes and diet.
Just a few days off the diet wiped out weeks of work.
Tomorrow the second four week block begins and everything in my regimine gets more intense.

GTA - Halloween Special [Nov. 1st, 2009|07:11 pm]
For the Halloween weekend I thought I'd tackle this old D&D character.
The original pumpkin headed Bugbear as depicted here inside the 1975 Greyhawk supplement.

Photobucket
Here's a picture of the original artwork. It was actually drawn this way as a mistake.
When Gary Gygax described the creature to artist Greg Bell, he said it had a head that was large like a pumpkin. Bell took the description too literally.

Photobucket
This is an old lead miniature based on the creature.
Photobucket
Another role playing game of the 1970's by the name of Runequest contained a creature inspired by it called the Jack O' Bear.

Photobucket
Classic D&D artist Erol Otis sculpted this very literal interpretation of a Bugbear.

Photobucket
But David C Sutherland III gave us the more acurate and enduring appearance of the Bugbear with this illustration from the 1977 Monster Manual.
Photobucket
Here is my version of the pumpkin headed original version.
