[Jul. 5th, 2009|09:39 am] |
OK, I've added the flag. Now it looks good. Wish I knew who the original artist was. Here's some animations.
I added some logos and it looks pretty cool.

| A Different World in Just 100 Years |
[Jul. 5th, 2009|05:11 am] |
Check out how different things were in the year 1909: The average life expectancy was 47years. Five leading causes of death were: 1. Pneumonia and influenza 2. Tuberculosis 3. Diarrhea 4. Heart disease 5. Stroke Only 14 percent of the homes had a bathtub. Most women only washed their hair once a month, and used egg yolks for shampoo. Only 8 percent of the homes had a telephone. There were only 8,000 cars and only 144 miles of paved roads. The maximum speed limit in most cities was 10 mph. The average wage in 1909 was 22 cents per hour. The average worker made between $200 and $400 per year . More than 95 percent of all births took place at home. Ninety percent of all doctors had no college education. The population of Las Vegas, Nevada, was only 30. Crossword puzzles, canned beer, and ice tea hadn't been invented yet. There was no Mother's Day or Father's Day. Two out of every 10 adults couldn't read or write. Only 6 percent of all Americans had graduated from high school. Marijuana, heroin, and morphine were all available over the counter at the local corner drugstores. Back then pharmacists said, "Heroin clears the complexion, gives buoyancy to the mind, regulates the stomach and bowels, and is, in fact, a perfect guardian of health". There were about 230 reported murders in the entire United States. |

| GI Joe to the Rescue |
[Jul. 4th, 2009|08:55 pm] |
In 1983 I got this toy catalogue with my GI Joe toy vehicles and was inspired to replicate it in colored pencils. It was my first attempt at rendering a fully illustrated scene in color. Wish I still had it. Now I've recreated it 26 years later.
You may remember that I did most of the work on it a few years ago with giant pink claws.
It didn't take me very long to swap out the claws with paintings of the Joes.
But to really clean it up and shade it properly took me the last two weeks for a little bit each day.
Here are a few close ups of the final image.

| Greatest American Comic Book |
[Jul. 3rd, 2009|12:09 pm] |
I got an envelope in the mail today from none other than William Katt, the Greatest American Hero!
Inside were the first two issues of the Greatest American Hero comic book signed to me personally. Not only that, but they are actually written by Mr. Katt too.
There was also a comic board that he wrote a message to me on as well.
Check out these two panels from inside issue 2, where he's actually talking to me.

Here's a really iconic image from inside issue 1.
From the inside back cover, a new picture of Mr. Katt.
Now the cover of issue 2 says "Issue 2 of 3" and I have a signed to me copy of issue 3 on the way too (I actually ordered it about 10 hours before the first two), but I've also read that it's running for 6 issues and there is an animated series in the works with the original cast doing the voices. There also is a live action movie in preproduction too. |

| Shawn's attempt at Kevin's World |
[Jun. 28th, 2009|10:08 am] |
Inspired by Kevin's World, Shawn tried his hand at drawing a few Kevins. I call them Kevin Mercury and Kevin Aragones.
A quick Google Image search for Freddy Mercury reveals the inspiration for the first one. He chose Freddy because of the moustache even though he never had a fu manchu. That was the biker from the Villiage People. Anyway, I love how he gave me curly hair and a Schwarzenegger arm.
Here's my version.
Now this one was a real oddity. He titled it, "Kevin get's a haircut" even though it doesn't look cut at all. In fact it looks like Mexican artist Sergio Aragones. Here's my version.
Here's all three of the Kevin's ready to party.

| 3 Years - On the Job |
[Jun. 26th, 2009|03:15 am] |
Today is the 3rd Anniversary of starting my job at the phone company. Sorry, I mean "Telecommunication Company". I spent the first 4 months training. Then 16 months as an Installation & Repair Technician. And 16 months as a Cable Maintenance Technician. That has also been the entire life of this company called Embarq. Just prior to my start date it had been called Sprint. And in 5 days it will become a company called CenturyLink.
In other news: Two days ago was the 3rd Anniversary of this blog. Yesterday Michael Jackson died at only 50 years old from a heart attack. I'm pretty bummed about that.
This time two years ago I was finishing up a month of work on my Fat Ninja animations. I would stop all together in three more days. This time last year I had completed posting my 8 Part "Road Trip to the Past", that I had taken a month before, where I had returned to my hometown after 20 years and told the story of my youth in pictures. Then I followed it by looking up, finding and contacting my childhood friends and posting funny stories from my childhood. |

| Clash of the Titans |
[Jun. 14th, 2009|07:21 pm] |
The year was 1981. My friend Mike came over to my house right after seeing a new movie called Clash of the Titans that looked really cool on the commercials. He brought with him a colored pencil drawing he had made of the image above. As soon as I saw it I realised that the most awesome thing in the world was drawing pictures and from that moment on I wanted to be an artist. That picture was the catalyst. 28 years later I have painted my version of that drawing and I have to admit it doesn't look as good as Mike's did.

| It Was Twenty Years Ago Today |
[Jun. 12th, 2009|10:59 pm] |
Well not really today, but if it's good enough for the Beatles, what the hey.
I've been driving and working for twenty years. Twenty years ago I had a Learner's Permit and fixed up a house by mowing the lawn, painting the interior and exterior, and water sealing the roof for $5 an hour. At the theater I saw Batman, Honey I Shrunk the Kids, Back to the Future II, Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, Karate Kid III and Star Trek V. New shows I watched on television were The Simpsons, Quantum Leap, Doogie Houser MD and The Arsenio Hall Show. Joining the cast of Saturday Night Live were Mike Myers and David Spade, and though I didn't watch it till the 4th season, Seinfeld had just started with a 35 year old Jerry Seinfeld, the same age I am now. On the radio were new acts like Milli Vanilli, Tone Loc and New Kids on the Block. While I was enjoying the new band Skid Row, my friend Shawn was listening to Poison's Every Rose Has it's Thorn in constant rotation. The Nintendo Gameboy and the Sega Genesis had just been released and Daniel Radcliffe (Harry Potter) had just been born.
What were YOU doing twenty years ago? |

| My Day At Work |
[Jun. 10th, 2009|07:55 pm] |
First I drive in at sunrise.
Then I park my car in the yard.
Then I pick one of my two work trucks. The one on the right is for maintenance.
But now I use the one on the left. It's for DAVAR testing. I'll show you how it works.
I drive up to one of these. It's called a Cross Box.
I open it and hook up all the test equipment.
Then I sit at the computer in the back of the truck and monitor the tests. That's about it.

| Land of the Lost |
[Jun. 6th, 2009|08:10 pm] |
Saw the new Land of the Lost movie this morning. It was created by insane people. Insane people.
A very oddball take on the original series. It's as if it was made by insane people.
Afterwards I wanted to buy a Sleestak action figure, but there are none. Only this coin bank and wacky wobbler that are available online. Lame.
Here are some cool fan made ones I found around the net. Too bad they weren't for sale in the lobby. Maybe I'll have to sculpt myself one.
It's the next day and I'm back with another picture. It turns out there is an action figure set available, but it looks like it's for preschoolers.
